This book would not have been possible without the cooperation of
those
who allowed me a glimpse into their private world. To the owners of
the
beautiful homes featured in these pages, who not only took an interest
in my project but also supplied invaluable information, showed
tremendous
patience and offered generous advice, I am forever grateful. Although
all are prominent members of society, little or no mention is made of
the residents of these magnificent homes.
This work does not presume to be a guide to celebrity places; rather,
it is a testimony to the splendid taste and exquisite design of these
Egyptian homes. Opulent or minimalist, traditional or contemporary,
they are all as diverse in style and distinct in personality as their
owners are. Whether decorated by top designers or furnished entirely
by the owners, each home reveals the individual taste and style of its
residents. Created in a part of the world that boasts the influence of
strikingly different historical eras, these homes reflect a tasteful
and clever blend of Oriental and European styles, showing traditional
Islamic or Coptic art often mixed with Pharaonic, Ottoman or
Napoleonic designs. The end effect is quite unique. Jean Claude Aunos'
photographs have skillfully captured the beauty and splendid details
of these homes. I also thank him for his genuine and sincere support
throughout the project. To my friend Fawzeya Elsawy, I am indebted for
her ability to assess my work and tell my stories. With Peter Ducket,
who wrote the texts for Composition in Elegance and Exalted Luxury and
Mona Elkouni, whose piece A Blend of Cultures was the first, she put
my ideas into words. I am also grateful to Raidy Printing Press s.a.l.;
their work has enhanced mine.
Finally, and most importantly, I would like to dedicate this book to
my husband and daughter whose encouragement and enduring patience have
sustained me throughout the creation of this work. I hope the end
result reflects the immense enthusiasm I have had for the production
of this book. |
